What is a wizard?

A wizard, in reference to software, is a (-n auxiliary) program that assists users in performing difficult tasks, such as installing or configuring software. The user is guided step by step through the process of configuring settings, and is kept informed about progression of the process, for instance with a percentage counter. The process of online bookings - ex: flight tickets, hotel rooms, etc - is also often through a wizard process. Another word used often for "Wizard" in this context is "Assistant" (for Apple computers and software).

How the wizard relates to the Tygron Platform

The New Project wizard (from here on the Wizard) is a tool that is implemented in the Tygron Platform to assist in the creation of a new project. With this tool (a start up of) a basic project can easily be created by filling in just a few details; the Tygron Platform will do the rest. The user is guided step by step through this process, and is constantly informed about the progression.
Use of the wizard will aid the user when creating a project, as the whole process of creating the project and its 3D World and is now condensed to only a few steps, compared to manually creating the 3D World from scratch. Using the wizard will save a lot of time, that can be used now to spend more time on designing the actual project.
The wizard will let the user select the name of the project, the location of the project, if the project uses real life data and if the project is based on a previous project template.

Watching the video tutorial

There is also a video tutorial available for creating a 'New Project'. You can find this video here: http://www.tygron.com/nl/2018/08/06/new-project/

Starting the wizard

When selecting 'New Project' from the Main Menu, the user is brought to the first panel of the wizard. Here the user is prompted to make some initial selections:

Naming the project

The first field lets the user fill in a name for the project. It is suggested to use a name based on the actual location (if possible). Please note that there is a character limit of 20 characters and only simple characters are allowed. Also no spaces are allowed; in case a separator must be used in the name, please use a hyphen ("...-...") or underscore ("..._...").
Enter the project name here

Selecting localization options

For new projects it is possible to create the project in Dutch or English. Also the system units and valuta can be set as required. It is currently only possible to use a single language per project. Multi language implementation will be available at a later date.

To use a template or not

When a project was previously set as a template project, this template can now be selected as alternative for creating a brand new project. A big advantage of using templates is that an existing project's indicators and actions can be used again. This is very convenient if the same project can be played in multiple areas.
Select to use a template (or not)

Selecting the project area

After naming the project, the second panel allows the user to select the area where the project takes place.

Searching for the right place

The search bar allows for quick jumping to the location that was entered.

Navigating over the map

By using the mouse it is possible to easily navigate over the world map;
  1. Use the left mouse button to select the area for the project.
  2. Use the right mouse button to hold and drag the map around.
  3. Use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out on the map.

Selecting the size of the project area

The slider lets the user select the desired project area size. Moving the slider to the right enlarges the area, which is visualized by the larger selection square on the map.

Minimum project area size: 500 m x 500 m
Maximum project area size: 10000 m x 10000 m

Resetting the map

Under the Area Size slider an option is available to refresh the map. This option brings the focus back to the selected area, which is helpful when navigating away from the selection.

Available data

When selecting an area, on the right side of the map a text indicates which type of data is available. When a full data set is available, the selection square will color blue and the text will remain white. When only a limited data set is available, the text will turn red, while indicating the limitations. The selection square will also turn red.

What types of data are used by the wizard?

When using the Wizard in the Tygron Platform, projects can be created based on Real Data or No Data.

Real data

On the second panel of the wizard, where the user can select the area, the default option for basing the map on is set to 'Selection'. When the user selects this option, the Tygron Platform will use databases linked to the selected area, such as the Open Street Maps (OSM) data set land polygons, a special OSM Coastal Line data set and official National Land Register data (if available) to generate and populate the 3D World. Currently, for the Netherlands, the Tygron Platform only uses the official Dutch Cadastral (= Land Register) Data for addresses and building types. Roads and constructions will be placed according to the available data. Most construction types are even already pre-linked in the Tygron Platform; if (for instance) a cobblestone road is present in the OSM data or Land Register data, the Tygron Platform also renders a cobblestone road in the 3D World on that specific location. For the New York City area (5 boroughs) the Tygron Platform uses the open PLUTO data set (http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/bytes/dwn_pluto_mappluto.shtml) from the NYC municipality. Find on overview on which data is loaded into the Tygron Platform on the page about GEO Data
Map based on selection (per default)

No data

On the second panel of the Wizard, where the user can select the area, if the user selects "Empty map", an empty area is generated, without any constructions or other visualizations present. The user has to manually sculpt the 3D World. Only the size of the area will be asked for, thus the bigger the area, the more manual work it will take to shape the 3D World, if desired.

Create a new project

With only a few steps it is possible to generate a new 3D model in the Tygron Platform. It is also possible to use a template project to speed up the process even more.

Create a new project based on real data

Main menuEditor→ New Project

The Tygron Platform has the ability to generate a 3D World based on real data. After selecting the area on the map, the wizard will populate the 3D World with constructions and terrain type, based on data from Open Street Maps and land register data if available. Roads and structures will be placed accordingly, and terrain will be shaped with rivers and banks, instantly creating a recognizable 3D World that is based on the area lay out in real life.

How to generate a project based on real data:

  1. Log in to the online Tygron Platform
  2. Select "New Project"
  3. Name the project as desired
  4. Set the localization options
  5. Continue by selecting 'Empty Project'
  6. Select the size of the 3D World area with the slider
  7. Navigate to or search for your location with the search bar if needed
  8. Select the desired location by moving the square to the location of your choice. To move the square use the left mouse button, to move the map use the right mouse button
  9. Keep the 'Selection' box checked and proceed by selecting the "Generate map" button
  10. Let the Wizard generate the area
  11. After the rendering process is complete, continue editing the newly created project

Generating a project, based on real data and a template

Main menu → New Project
Because the creation of a project is more then rendering a 3D World only, it is also possible to generate a project based on a template from another project. By using a template project, multiple stakeholders and their indicators are added to the project. A basic spatial issue is incorporated in this template, so that the created project has an actual objective to resolve. In the near future more dedicated template projects will become available. Besides pre-formated templates, it is also possible to set your own project as a template project. The template is being selected on the same panel as where the project (area) is named. Localization settings will be set by the template.

How to generate a project based on real data and a template:

  1. Log in to the online Tygron Platform
  2. Select "New Project"
  3. Name the project as desired, localization options are currently set by the template
  4. Select the template to use from the list (e.g. Climategame Template)
  5. Proceed by selecting the 'Use...' button
  6. Search with the search bar the area you want to generate
  7. Select the size of the 3D World with the slider
  8. Select the area on the map by clicking with the left mouse button
  9. When ready, confirm the selection by selecting the "Generate map" button
  10. Let the wizard generate the project area
  11. Continue editing the newly rendered project

Generating a project not based on real data

Main menu → New Project
In some situations it might be desired to generate a 3D World that is not based on real data. For instance when a project needs to be created around a fictional area, or when a project only needs to be created to quickly place and view a construction. In such a case it is possible to select in the wizard the option to generate a project not based on real data. The result will be a 3D World without any constructions or terrain type. These will need to be added manually, in the editor.

How to generate a project NOT based on real data:

  1. Log in to the online Tygron Platform
  2. Select "New Project"
  3. Name the project as desired
  4. Set the localization options
  5. Continue by selecting 'Empty Project'
  6. Select the size of the 3D World area with the slider
  7. Select the box 'Empty Map'
  8. Continue by selecting the "Generate map" button
  9. Let the Wizard generate the area
  10. After the rendering process is complete, continue editing the newly created project
